SOC Analyst · Lesson 1 of 8

Working an alert queue

A security operations center, or SOC, reviews signals that may indicate trouble. A junior analyst makes an alert understandable enough to close with evidence or hand to the right responder.

SEE THE IDEA

Same queue. Different context.

Two fictional alerts arrive together.

  1. Payroll account

Unexpected activity involving a sensitive service. Verify related events and assess impact promptly.

  2. Training account

Activity matches a documented test. Confirm its scope before closing this alert.

Priority follows evidence, business impact, and the response policy, not arrival order alone.
Read the visualWhat would make the training explanation insufficient?

A mismatch in account, time, or activity. An approved test does not explain unrelated events.

Start with the question

Identify what triggered the rule, which account or asset is involved, and the time window. A rule name is a lead, not a conclusion.

Triage with context

Look at the affected service, confidence in the evidence, and possible impact. Queue age alone should not decide urgency.

Stay within your role

Use the approved playbook. Escalate decisions that require authority or expertise you do not have.

Put it in context

At fictional Harbor Books, an alert involves a payroll account during an unusual time window. You check the account owner and relevant events before assigning urgency.

Explain why an alert matters before choosing an action.
